Topical hair loss treatments are formulations applied directly to the scalp or hair with the goal of reducing hair thinning, stimulating dormant follicles, and slowing or reversing hair loss. Unlike systemic (oral) medications that circulate through the body, topical treatments deliver active ingredients straight to the affected area.

These treatments can come in various forms such as liquids, foams, sprays, serums and shampoos, and are designed to be easy to use in daily routines. Topicals are often chosen for their localized action and lower risk of systemic side effects.

Why Topical Treatments Are Effective

Topical hair loss treatments are among the most widely recommended approaches for several reasons:

  • Targeted Delivery: Because the medication is applied directly to the scalp, higher concentrations of active ingredients reach hair follicles without significant dilution in the bloodstream.

  • Fewer Systemic Side Effects: Compared with oral medications, topical options typically have reduced risk of systemic effects on organs and body systems — making them suitable for people who may not tolerate oral therapies well.

  • Dual-Mode Actions: Many topicals work through multiple mechanisms — for example, improving blood flow to follicles while also extending the growth phase (anagen) of hair.

  • Easy Incorporation Into Daily Routine: Most formulations can be used at home with minimal equipment and are compatible with existing hair care practices.

  • Usable Alone or in Combination: Topical treatments can be prescribed on their own or combined with other therapies (like oral medications or laser therapy) for enhanced results.

Finasteride inhibits 5α-reductase type II, the enzyme that converts testosterone into dihydrotestosterone (DHT) — the hormone most directly implicated in male pattern hair loss. Studies show that daily finasteride can significantly slow hair loss and often produce regrowth in many men over time. Reduces DHT levels – Slows follicle shrinkage – Supports thicker, stronger hair. Commonly prescribed at 1 mg daily for hair loss.

Potential side effects include lowered libido, erectile dysfunction, mood changes and decreased ejaculate volume.

Dutasteride is another 5α-reductase inhibitor that blocks both type I and type II isoenzymes, giving it broader action than finasteride. It is also significantly more potent than finasteride. Often used when finasteride alone is insufficient. May produce stronger effects in some patients. Typically prescribed off-label for hair loss. Typically prescribes at 0.5 mg daily for hair loss.

Potential side effects include lowered libido, erectile dysfunction, mood changes and decreased ejaculate volume. Because dutasteride blocks more enzyme types, some patients report higher rates side effects than with finasteride.

Topical treatments carry a far lower risk of side effects than oral treatments because they are localised and not systemic. however, It is still important to be well informed of potential side effects and to provide consent before starting treatment. The majority of patients experience significant hair results with no adverse effects. For more information you can speak with one of our hair loss doctors.
